Music Scholars’ Recital – Calne Festival
After the London chamber music extravaganza at the Royal Academy of Music, we went ‘solo’ for the annual performance at the Calne Festival.
Eight very fine and varied performers graced the stage with Pia Von Wersebe (CO U6) leading from the front with some classy Beethoven. Ben Spink (SU L6) enchanted with some schmoozy Vizzutti, Allegra Hannan (NC Sh) showed great composure and sensitivity in the Elgar Romance, and with Annabel Chessher (LI U6) offering a most beautiful and intimate work for solo guitar it was obvious to the audience that this was all a bit special.
Poppy McGhee (NC Sh) continued the splendid journey with a ravishing rendition of John Williams’s Remembrances, Christian Freeman (SU L6) provided excellent contrast with a moving and brave performance on trombone, paving the way for Jess Faber (CO U6) to demonstrate her considerable talent and artistry in Liszt’s Petrarch Sonnet No 123.
To bring proceedings to a close, Monty Pretor-Pinney (B1 Re) delivered some sparkling and entertaining Scott Joplin and in so doing, wrapped up a memorable concert.
Thanks and admiration to Miss Toomer too for her fine and expert accompaniment.
