Barclay leads UK Astronomy Olympiad team
Charles Barclay FRAS, Head of Astronomy at Marlborough College, has just returned from Beijing where he led the UK Astronomy Olympiad team.
The ten-day long 12th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) saw the team win two Silver medals and two Honourable Mentions.
The competition was particularly tough (one five-hour theory paper, one five-hour Data-Analysis and a one hour Observational paper) with impressive results from this young team (two from state schools and three independent schools) led by Barclay and Dr Alex Calverley FRAS (RGS Guildford).
The selection process for IOAA 2019 has already started and three Marlborough College pupils have recently taken the second qualification paper, with Zac Place (CO U6) having already gained a Distinction in the ‘entry’ paper earlier this term.
