Review: Advent Carol Service
The annual Advent Carol Service, held this year on Sunday 25th November, is always very special. The Chapel is awash with candles and with the beautiful atmosphere created through the readings and prayers it takes one beyond the trials and tribulations of everyday life. If you add the music to that which is such a focal point of the Service it makes for something truly memorable.
The choir were on sensational form, expertly directed by Choirmaster Adam Staines who coaxed the most exquisite tone from his singers throughout. It was sensitive, expressive and polished and it’s quite clear that the choir responds very well to his instruction and precision. The repertoire was also perfectly selected including some of Mr Staines’ own compositions which gave it that extra special personal touch.
Particular praise should also be given to the new College organist Christopher Burrows whose full-blooded and dramatic playing both before and after the Service was as captivating as it was compelling.
