XV set for Seaford

The Marlborough College rugby XV will travel to face Seaford College in the quarter-final of the National Schools Cup on Wednesday 16th January (2.15pm).

Marlborough reached the last eight with a hard-fought 19-10 win at Dean Close on Wednesday 9th January.

The re-arranged fixture saw the XV, who won seven of their 11 games during the Michaelmas term, emerge as victors from the early Lent term encounter in Gloucestershire.

Master in Charge of Rugby, Terry Gilmour, was delighted with the attitude and application of his young charges.

“We scored a great early try and we went in 5-3 up at half-time. In the second half we played in the right areas and created enough pressure to put together two quick tries in the third quarter of the game,” he said.

“Credit to Dean Close, who notched a fantastic try with a huge pack, but for the last quarter we came under huge pressure and defended solidly for the final stages. It was a big test going straight into a game after the Christmas break, but the main reason we won the game was the attitude and desire of the boys.

“Their decision-making was on point and we’re now deservedly in the last eight. They’re a team who have shown a lot of resilience and confidence.”
