Higher Education and Gap Year Fair
Alessandra Pidgeon (LI L6) looks back at the Higher Education and Gap Year Fair, held on Monday 10th June.
What stood out for me overall was the enthusiastic and friendly attitude of all the university and gap year representatives. Each stall captured my attention and everyone was happy to answer any questions, no matter how minor.
The fair enabled us to chat to current or past students from a wide range of universities around the country. This was very useful in that we got an idea of the university from the students’ perspectives rather than that of professors or websites. Personally, I found the Hult Business School impressive. Having never heard of it before, I am now thoroughly intrigued by it as an alternative option to university, and plan to research it further. Had it not been for the higher education desks at the fair I would have definitely not have come across this possibility.
The range of gap year opportunities that is available has inspired me to be more open-minded and consider all of the incredible places I can visit and things I can do in order to make sure that I make the most of a year off.
Many of us have not a clue what universities and courses to apply for and whether to take a year off, and the afternoon meant that we could explore a great variety of different possibilities all in one place. The range of gap year opportunities that is available to us, from skiing courses in Japan to volunteering in Costa Rica, has inspired me to be more open-minded and consider all of the incredible places I can visit and things I can do in order to make sure that I make the most of a year off. It is very unlikely that we will get another chance in our lives to be able to dedicate a whole year to exploring the world and to gaining skills we desire. Therefore I think it was very important that we could consider some of the amazing opportunities on offer.
