Portrait Sculpting Course
I’ve been very fortunate to join eight people of all walks of life on a Luke Shepherd sculpting course near Ashburton, Devon. Luke works in clay and has done many commissions over his 30-year career. His clay portraits are usually cast in bronze when completed.
This four-day sculpting course is designed to teach students to look at the model more meticulously and practice precise measuring and sculpting of a head. We spent the first day getting the measurements accurate and building the profile of the face. The second day was dedicated to constructing the shape of the face. We continued to fill in the faces for the next two days and working on capturing the essence of the model.
It’s been inspiring and insightful. I’ve learned many techniques that I can now pass on to our art pupils.
