End of Year Showcase Concert
At the end of an enthralling year of music making, we were treated to one last hurrah in the form of the popular End of Year Showcase Concert. Performed to a large and enthusiastic Memorial Hall audience, a truly inclusive event featured both music scholars and non-music scholars alike in a high-class gig, allowing all musical departments to shine and sparkle.
This concert is something of a grass roots occasion, promoting pupils from the Shell and Remove year groups, and on this performance, there is clearly much to look forward to in the years ahead as they rise to the top. Concert Band opened proceedings with a polished performance, with both the Junior Percussion Ensemble and the Intermediate Percussion Ensemble offering true precision in their presentations.
Leo Mu (CO Sh) demonstrated he is an exciting prospect on tuba and Mr Gibbons should be congratulated on taking over the reins so successfully with Jazz Ensemble who gave an energetic and spirited rendition of two numbers. Bella Bowman (MO Sh) was simply stunning in Mozart’s ‘Alleluia’ and true contrast was offered by both Joe Oliver (CO Re) and Camilla Brebbia (NC Re) in ‘Perfect Duet’ (it was), having been preceded by Joe in an excellent solo number of his own.
The Strings brought the concert to a classy conclusion with a splash of Elton John, a fascinating ‘east meets west’ collaboration with Sarthak Munjal (B1 Sh) as soloist on tabla, and Isla Scott (DA Re), Poppy McGhee (NC Sh) and Allegra Hannan (NC Sh) producing a dazzling display in the closing work.
