Pupils meet Squash Legend
It was a great privilege and inspiration for the pupils of Marlborough College and St John’s Academy to meet squash great Nick Matthews on Thursday 19th September.
Pupils were given the opportunity to ask questions relating to his career, gain advice on improving their own game and, of course, to meet one of their sporting heroes. There was a tangible ‘buzz’ and a real sense of excitement about the visit and, no doubt, a renewed determination to keep working hard to achieve their own goals, in whatever field they may be.
Nick’s glittering squash career must go down as one of sport’s most successful and extraordinary. He has won each of the following tournaments three times; World Championships, Commonwealth Games and the British Open; he has nine National Squash Titles to his name and 35 PSA World Tour titles, and, needless to say, has been ranked number one in the world.
In the process, Nick has earned himself a very telling nickname, ‘the Wolf’. He is renowned for his extraordinary athleticism and brutal training regime, exemplified by his well-known cross-fit workout, aptly named ‘the Rumble’, and has been awarded an OBE for his services to squash, as well as being selected by his fellow athletes to carry the English flag at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
