Hannibal versus Rome

Ben Kane, whose books include the ‘Eagles of Rome’ series, ‘Spartacus’ and ‘The Forgotten Legion’ trilogy, visited Marlborough last week to talk to the Shell about Hannibal’s daring invasion of Italy in 218 B.C. which culminated two years later in one of the bloodiest battles in history at Cannae.

Mr Kane doesn’t just talk the talk. He has walked the routes he describes in his novels, often clad in expertly crafted replicas of Roman armour and equipment, some of which he had brought with him.

Afterwards many pupils came onto the Memorial Hall stage to handle the weapons, but no blood was spilled.
