On Tuesday 14th September, the College was delighted to host a special event to mark the opening of our Beko Innovation Centre. The timing and size of the event had been affected by the pandemic but it was wonderful to welcome our partners, Beko, our generous donors and the members of staff who made the building happen to a morning of speeches and demonstrations which showcased the College’s vision for the future of science, technology and innovation both within our curriculum and in outreach programmes and external collaborations.
The building was officially opened by Giles Henderson, our Chair of Council, and Hakan Bulgurlu, CEO of Arçelik, the holding company for Beko, who both spoke about the importance of STEM education in encouraging young people to find solutions to the problems facing the world today, most notably the climate disaster.
Pupils from the Lower Sixth explained how they have been training with the Young Guru Academy to use their award-winning Twin Science and Robotics kits with our local primary school partners in classroom sessions which will commence this month. The event was also an opportunity to launch the Marlborough College Student Innovation Awards (MISA) and to award the first bronze certificates to 11 talented Remove pupils. Congratulations to Yuta Y, Izzy B, Bear S, Ludo C, Cecilia A, Elodie T, Charlie M, Sam C, Harry H, Sophia M and a special mention for Dani L who spoke at the event about her project on how the innovations of Ancient Egypt continue to affect the modern world.
