We were delighted to welcome to the College Mr Enver Solomon, CEO of Refugee Council in London, following an invitation extended by the Chaplain, Reverend Novis.
The Refugee Council is a UK-based charity that works with refugees and asylum seekers, providing them with support, aid and advice. As the crisis in Afghanistan escalates, the Council’s current focus is on providing urgent and direct support for Afghan refugees, who have lost everything, as they reach the UK.
Mr Solomon spoke at the year group assemblies on Monday 20th September where he was introduced by Naomi H (U6) who is taking a leading role in promoting awareness of this urgent cause across the College. He also attended a Remove Religious Studies class.
Upon his arrival at the College, we were able to present Mr Solomon with a cheque for £2,245.60 to support the Council’s work which was the generous result of a retiring collection from the Confirmation Services from this past Sunday. This charitable donation represents the beginning of a term of special focus across the Marlborough College community on helping and supporting Afghan refugees who are settling in the UK. Pupils, OMs, parents, Common Room and support staff will all have the opportunity to engage in various ways of raising funds and collecting items to support the wonderful work of Refugee Council, themselves this year celebrating their 70th anniversary. A pupil committee is meeting with the Chaplain to develop fun and educational ways of raising funds and gathering supplies and we look forward to sharing the full programme with everyone shortly.
