It was a fine, sunny day and the atmosphere in the marquee was electric. We started with an exciting instrumental performance from B1, setting the tone for what was an afternoon of good quality music. Each House had chosen their song and created a cover version using instrumentalists and singers in their house. We had multiple vocalists singing in harmony, string, brass and woodwind players, as well as the traditional guitar, bass, piano and drums.
Our adjudicator, Gary Tarn, was a singer, song writer for the band Drum Theatre in the 1980s and is now a successful BAFTA nominated film composer. Mr Tarn thoroughly enjoyed adjudicating the afternoon and found choosing the winner very difficult, as standards were so high.
The crowd was amazing, cheering every house and supporting performances from our younger pupils, showing exceptional Marlborough College spirit. They had fun dancing and singing all afternoon and were a credit to their Houses.
Performances were all polished and the bands’ professionalism on stage also stood out. The winners were C2 with a performance of Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand, with runners up, Summerfield performing What you Know by Two Door Cinema Club. Mr Tarn also commended B1, Barton Hill, C3, New Court, Littlefield, Preshute and Turner.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon for all involved and it was great to see pupils getting a chance to let their hair down before the exam period.
Our next Rock and Pop concert will take place in the Memorial Hall on Saturday 14 May at 7.30pm with a full line up already confirmed, so I look forward to seeing you there.
