What a wonderful start to the Michaelmas Term and the 2022/23 academic year.
As I pause and reflect upon the first half of term, I would firstly like to say how thoroughly enjoyable it has been to meet so many of our pupils and staff. Whether in their classroom, in their boarding houses, in Chapel, in the Memorial Hall, in the library, on the sports fields or around campus, it is genuinely inspiring to see our pupils enriching themselves in all that the Marlborough community has to offer.
The start of a new academic year always brings with it a palpable sense of optimism and excitement. It is the perfect time to set our goals and aim high, in line with Marlborough’s values of community, ambition, service and initiative. These values are important, they are our North Star and as such we will be regularly checking in to see that we are heading in the right direction.
At the start of term, we talked positively about aspiration and the importance of setting ourselves high standards of appearance and high standards of punctuality. Taking personal responsibility is the foundation upon which we will all continually grow and develop. Respecting oneself and respecting all others is a timeless value and is one that will serve us well, not only throughout our time at Marlborough, but also throughout life.
We have achieved so much in the first half of term and as we look forward to the second half of the Michaelmas Term, I would like to share one of my favourite Aristotle quotes; “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence therefore is not an act but a habit”.
