Master’s Letter

Thursday 20th October 2022

Since the exeat Newsletter, life has continued on at a brilliant pace at Marlborough with all pupils fully and impressively engaged in the array of pursuits and activities on offer.

On the academic front, Edward F, Charlotte G and Amberly P achieved Gold Awards in the Chemistry Olympiad; Erin B, Bella M and Lexi S were commended in Oxford University essay competitions; and Dani L in Lower School had an article which she wrote on Che Guevara published by Zimbabwean Lodge Magazine.

On the co-curricular front, it has been fantastic to see sport in full flow this half-term, with not only our own pupils flourishing and competing brilliantly for their school but also with hundreds of pupils from beyond Marlborough having the opportunity to enjoy our facilities at wonderful events such as the Festival of Sport. Sophie H deserves another mention in this edition of our Newsletter for becoming the first junior GB woman ever to become World Champion in the Individual Junior Skeet Competition. She then went on to become World Champion in the World Junior Mixed Pair Competition – an incredible and unprecedented achievement. Our musicians have excelled both in Choir on Sundays and also on the Memorial Hall stage with some dazzling individual performances; and I was delighted to award Charlie H a richly deserved, prestigious Army Scholarship in recent days.

In outreach, the work of our pupils with Swindon Academy and with pupils in local primary schools has continued to impress greatly, and I congratulate Aoife G for her exceptional work with the Mount Anthony Housing Scheme in Dublin which was celebrated in the Irish Independent.

I wish all Marlburian families a hugely enjoyable and restful break over half term, and I look forward to seeing you on your return.

Louise Moelwyn-Hughes
