The College’s preparations for Christmas began on Wednesday 23rd November with An Evening for Advent; an annual joint celebration between the Modern Languages and Music Departments, where our linguists treated us to a selection of readings in the languages that they study, alongside performances from our talented musicians. The linguists included a range of pupils from the Remove (with some only having studied their languages for just over a year) to the Upper Sixth. A particularly joyful reading to music was led by our Arabic linguists (Laila S, Millie G, and Jack B) who were accompanied by their teacher on traditional drums. We were also treated to the Lord’s Prayer in Japanese by Mac P and Phoenix F, who had only started studying the language at the beginning of the Michaelmas Term; a remarkable achievement. The musicians also provided a wonderful interlude between the readings with notable performances by Bella B whose rendition of Strauss’ Allerseelen provided the audience with a moment of poignant reflection, and Dima M with his performance of Wolf’s Schlafendes Jesuskind. A particular mention should also be given to Paddy C and Joshua T, who were the only pupils to both read in their respective languages (Paddy in Italian and Joshua in Russian) and to provide a musical performance, with Paddy singing Bach’s Mein gläubes Herze frohlocke, and Joshua performing Christkind by Cornelius, which was also accompanied by Freddie V on the Clarinet. It was, overall, a wonderful evening had by all and a special moment to start the Advent period.
