Dappled with fading light from the winter sun, the stained glass of the Chapel gives way to darkness. And so, amidst the shade of the Advent Service, and from a single solitary candle, light once more fills the building as a celebration to us all of God’s kingdom anew and the Nativity of Jesus – everyone holding a simple hand-candle that has been lit from one single flame is reminded of the purpose of such a contemplative service.
The Advent Carol Service allows the opportunity for a more reflective and poignant moment amidst the business of the Michaelmas Term. With Advent readings and carols, those gathered are allowed to witness an undoubted jewel in the College calendar.
