The Sports Report: Week 4

Friday 27th January 2023

On exeat Saturday, three Marlborough pupils played their part in a win for Bath Rugby U18s over their Harlequins counterparts. Well done to Charlie B, James M and Ed W who all featured for the blue, black and white at Chippenham RFC.

Congratulations to Rory C who came second in the Wiltshire Schools Cross Country race at Sheldon School, also on Saturday. Rory clocked an impressive time of 21 minutes and 19 seconds over the 6.6km course. We wish him well in the South-West Championships in two weeks’ time.

It has been a fine start to the Lent Term for the basketball U18s. they completed six wins from their opening six fixtures with victories over Trowbridge (68-35) and Bradfield (83-55), with significant points contributions from Arthur B (36pts) and Sean R (20 points).

The boys’ hockey 1st XI came away 3-0 winners from their trip to Bryanston and in netball, the 1st VII played out a thrilling 37-37 contest at home to Wellington. The 2nd pair were winners at home to Winchester in rackets – one of five matches on the day – and in squash, there were friendly matches with Bradfield and Wellington providing useful practice ahead of the next rounds of National Schools matches. The fives mixed U18 side defeated Malvern College on the road as did the fencing mixed U18 side at Wycliffe.

This weekend the netball 1st VII and U16As will join schools from across the South West in Bournemouth to compete in the South West Regional Schools Finals. The top two teams from the U19, U16 & U14 age group competitions go forward to represent the South West at the National School Finals later in the year.

There are almost 50 fixtures for Marlborough teams this weekend across football, boys’ hockey, lacrosse and netball – who in addition to the aforementioned nationals, have a block fixture against Wellington. There are also block fixtures for boys’ hockey and football – both against Abingdon School. In lacrosse, there is a triangular tournament with Sherborne Girls and St Helen & St Katharine.
