Professor Peter Burke

Monday 27th March 2023

On March 21st we were honoured to be visited by Professor Peter Burke and his wife Professor Maria Lucia Pallares-Burke.

Professor Burke, who is one of the most important cultural historians of our times, gave two lectures. One was about whether the Renaissance was more concerned with ‘renovation or innovation’, and the other was about the phenomenon – and the importance – of polymaths.

He spoke to an assortment of historians and scholars, and was riveting and persuasive. We were also able to welcome the Burkes into some lessons, where they joined discussions about the French Renaissance, Holy Week and the curriculum.
