The Sports Report: Week 8

It has been another action-packed week for Marlborough College sport with a host of competitive matches and team successes to look back on.

Monday

A busy day of sport in and out of the swimming pool saw the girls’ water polo team take part in a quadrangular tournament, with a 7-0 win over North London Collegiate School the highlight of the afternoon. The U15E netball side were also in action, with a narrow defeat to near neighbours Pewsey Vale U15A.

Tuesday

In boys’ hockey, the U14A side produced some exciting play as they competed in the Regional Finals tournament held at Millfield. Scoring draws were secured against Canford, Clifton, Dean Close before a brilliant victory against Blundell’s and a narrow 1-0 loss to Kings College Taunton in their final match.

In basketball, the U14’s played a short format game vs Sir Thomas Rich’s School (playing 4×5 minute quarters) winning 18-14. The match also saw Marlborough College Malaysia pupil Bruce, here as part of the Shell Exchange, feature in his second game for MCUK.

Wednesday

U14 netballers came through unbeaten from their block fixture against St Mary’s Calne, with the U14A winning 38-19 after a thrilling encounter.

Former England and Team GB Sevens player Dan Norton – the leading all-time try scorer in the World Rugby Sevens Series with over 350 tries – was on Hamersley to help across the rugby programme. He took part in a Q&A with U14’s players and leading a training session for the Colts and Seniors (pictured above).

Thursday

A busy day of Marlburian sport saw 28 fixtures. The U18 basketball side made it nine wins from nine games after a 72-34 victory over Eton. In squash (below), the mixed U18s retained the Radley-Wellington-Marlborough triangular trophy with 4-2 and 5-1 victories.

1st XI footballers registered a 1-1 draw at Lydiard Park Academy whilst a good day for fives saw a brace of wins against Bradfield. There was also success for the fencing team, who returned victorious from a trip to Clifton, maintaining their extended unbeaten run.

Weekend Preview

There are 56 fixtures scheduled for this Saturday across football, boys’ hockey, lacrosse and netball.
