The Sports Report: Week 1

Friday 21st April 2023

The Summer Term is underway and Marlburian sport has been buzzing with pre-season camps, cup competitions and international achievement.

After three pre-season cancellations, the XI cricketers finally got their season underway against Lord Wandsworth on Tuesday. Captained this term by Joe F, they secured an impressive 123 run win with key contributions from Woody W (68), Jake H (55), Charlie C (3-9), George S (3-10) & Max D M (3-20). Congratulations to Yusuf K, George S, Jake H & Ludo C for making their debuts.

On Thursday, the Colts 1, Junior Colts 1 & Yearlings 1 all began their campaigns with T20s against Wiltshire age groups, while the Girls’ XI travelled to Clifton. Key performances came from Ludo C (55*), Finn D (40), George Z (38*), Rory S (36*), Sholto H (32), Charlie C (3-11), Seb W (2-9) & Sophia M (2-19). The Colts secured a convincing victory while there were defeats for the other three sides despite plenty of promise on show.

In boys’ hockey, an extended run in the England Hockey National Tier 2 Cup continues for the Colts as they travel to Trent College this afternoon (4.15pm). A 6-0 win over Cottesmore in the last round set-up the semi-final tie.

A group of Lower Sixth and Remove tennis players enjoyed a fantastic week of pre-season at the Vale do Lobo Tennis Academy in Portugal. Two sessions a day and a tournament with Bedford, Surbiton and Uppingham, set things up beautifully for the term ahead.  This was backed up by a first round victory for the Girls 1st IV in the Aberdare Cup, beating Dean Close 10-2 on Thursday. The girls now face South Wilts Grammar in the next round.

There were also a number of representational honours achieved over the holiday period including Flo M (Wiltshire Women’s Cricket) and Rory S (Bath Rugby Academy). The Marlborough College Rugby Club will come together on Saturday evening for their end of season dinner in Norwood, with former England Sevens star Dan Norton the guest of honour.

Congratulations also go to Kitty M who represented England U21 Women’s Lacrosse team on Saturday 15th April, beating Scotland and Wales to win the Home Internationals.

A huge well done also to Rory C who ran the Reading Half Marathon in just 1 hour 13 minutes on Sunday 2nd April. Our best wishes also go to Elmhurst Housemistress, Harriet Cox, who is running the London Marathon this Sunday.
