  • National success for Fives
  • Impressive start for Marlburian cricketers
  • Rugby sevens legend at Marlborough

The new term began in style for Marlborough cricketers, as all but three of the 16 sides that played last Saturday were victorious. The XI won at Sherborne (won by 65 runs D/L method) with impressive batting from Charlie B with 86. A mention also for Ben W in the Yearlings 3 for his knock of 74. There was also an impressive comeback for the Colts 1, who recovered from 26-7 to win a thrilling contest with an over to spare. Ed C was the bowling highlight with 5-5 for the Colts 2.

In tennis, an impressive 30 matches were played with all senior sides winning with the boys facing Sherborne in a block fixture and the girls facing up against Wellington College.

Saturday evening saw the rugby club’s end of season celebration dinner in Norwood, featuring sevens star Dan Norton as guest speaker. The evening included speeches, awards and a commemorative photobook (compiled by James R) handed to each player courtesy of superb photo coverage from Jeremy Hebblethwaite. Well done to Humphrey B who represented Bath Rugby Academy U17s in a close encounter against Leicester Tigers Academy, winning 26-23 at Royal Wootton Bassett RFC.

On Sunday, there was success at the National Schoolgirls Fives Championships with Maya H and Chloë N winning the National U14 Plate Doubles Final.

Marlborough’s golfers secured a win in their opening fixture of the summer term on Tuesday as they got the better of Dean Close, played at Marlborough GC. Mickey W shot an impressive level-par 72 including an eagle and Ollie B showed he is the most improved player at the College with a fine back nine of six over.

The inclement weather put paid to further cricket action on Thursday as both the XI v MCC and the girls’ fixture against Clifton College were abandoned due to the weather. Tennis matches against St Mary’s Calne also fell foul of the weather.

This Saturday there are 75 matches scheduled with an athletics meet at home to St Benedict’s School, numerous swimming matches and target rifle shooting at Bisley. There are also cricket fixtures against Wellington College, Westonbirt and Eton with tennis matches against Wellington College, Sherborne Girls and Cheltenham Ladies’ College.
