The Sports Report: Week 6

The sporting week began with 36 fixtures took place on Saturday 20th May with an athletics invitational at Winchester College and a target rifle shooting contest at Bisley joined by a plethora of fixtures for cricket and tennis. The cricket XI beat Radley College by 123 runs thanks to 52 from Woody W and impressive bowling figures from Yusuf K 3-10, Max W 3-20, Charlie C 2-3. There were 19 tennis fixtures with some impressive performances, especially in the lower school.

In rugby, well done to Rory S, Gabe P and Toby M who represented Bath Rugby Academy’s U15 side against the West Midlands on Sunday. On the same day, Charlie H shone for Wiltshire U14s Cricket, hitting 51 off 20 balls in their victory over Somerset.

Girls’ football continues to grow at Marlborough and there was another fixture on Tuesday, as the U15As lost out 3-2 to St John’s after a thrilling encounter.

In golf, the boys’ U16 team travelled to Bradfield on Tuesday to compete in a triangular fixture versus Bradfield and Winchester College. Freddie B had his best ever round (+3) and there was a memorable birdie for new recruit Jack B. Overall the boys gave an excellent account of themselves, going down in the match to Bradfield but overcoming Winchester.

On Thursday, Marlburian cricketers played out 11 fixtures against the likes of Dauntsey’s, Clifton, Monkton Combe & Cranford House. The girls’ XI beat Monkton Combe by 42 runs having been 138-0 off 20 (Lily H 32 rtd, Sophia M 32 rtd, Issy G 24*, Olivia M 22*). Monkton Combe were 96-6 off 20 (Phoebe T 2-10, 1 each for Jemima E & Jemima C). The 4th XI won by 24 runs with Toby M hitting 82 not out.

There were 14 tennis matches played on Thursday with a clean sweep for the girls’ U15s and U14s in their nine fixtures against Bradfield. The Remove and Lower Sixth boys also had a great afternoon of tennis with four wins from four against Dauntsey’s.

Congratulations go to Max D who registered figures of 2-27 playing for Gloucestershire 2nd XI V Oxford UCCE on Thursday.

Prize Day this Saturday will see showpiece fixtures for the XI against the Marlborough Blues (OMs) at 1.15pm and the Girls’ XI will host Shrewsbury School, beginning at 9.30am.  There are also tennis fixtures with a Select VI taking on an Old Marlburians team.
