- National Cup progress for cricketers
Pupils returned refreshed from the half-term break ready for an action-packed second half of term.
The Junior Colts were straight into action on Monday as they travelled to Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr, Swansea, in the last 16 of the National U15 ESCA Cup. Hugo H (6-6 off his 8 overs) was the bowling hero. Set a target of 34, the JCs won by ten wickets with a swift opening contribution of 36-0 off 5.4 (Otis R-H 18*, Bertie C 17*). They now play KES Southampton in the South West Final (National Quarter-Final) at home on Monday 19th June.
The golf team enjoyed a great match against Bradfield College at Calcot Park Golf Club this week. Captain Albie P led from the front, winning his match in fine style and recording an under par round. There was also a win for Rory S and a half for Hugo H, meaning a narrow 2.5/1.5 victory. The boys enjoyed the course and the Augusta-like sloping greens! We thank Bradfield for hosting us and for a close-fought match.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Remove took part in the opening round of Babcock at the Athletics Track. Great effort from all pupils at this half-way stage. The top performers in the boys were Charlie H, Tommy L and Milo T and in the girls Bella B, Millie A and Bea G.
There were two cricket matches on Thursday, with the JC1s registering their second win inside four days with a home victory by 67 runs over Bishop Wordsworth’s School. The 3rd XI had a much closer encounter. Having hit 187-3 off 20 overs (Jamie W 53, Henry C 49, Tom C 45, Teddy B 28*), the 3rd XI won by 11 runs.
This Saturday, Marlburian cricketers will be hosting their inaugural #REDFORRUTH day for the block fixture against Bradfield College. The aim is to raise awareness of the Ruth Strauss Foundation – a charity in memory of Ruth Strauss, wife of former England captain Sir Andrew Strauss. It is hoped that pupils, staff, parents and spectators will join in the spirit of the occasion by wearing Red on the day.
In athletics, pupils will be taking part in the County Championships at Swindon Athletics Track whilst there will also be a home invitational.
Tennis will also return to action with 14 fixtures with the boys taking on Eton College in a block fixture and the girls versus Godolphin School.
Finally, another mention for the achievements of George T, who competed in the European Triathlon Championships in Madrid over half-term. George represented Great Britain in the U20 Age Group team on Sunday and finished sixth in his category and first within the GB team.
