Marlburian sport has continued at pace this week despite the busy exam season, with over 100 fixtures scheduled within the final seven days of the Summer Term.
There has also been news on the national sports scene, as we congratulate Sarah H who has been called up to the Scotland U18s hockey squad for the European Championships in German next month.
The sporting week began on Saturday 17th June with 31 matches played and some outstanding performances recorded. All bar two of the nine cricket teams were victorious in their block fixtures against Cheltenham College whilst at the Marlborough College Invitational Athletics meet, the girls won overall and the boys finished in second. The highlights of the week have been Rory C running a 6 minute 24 s 2k Steeplechase, Isla B 67 seconds in the 400m hurdles, and Phil M and India W have all been selected for English Schools.
There were a host of competitive fixtures in boys’ and girls’ tennis with block fixtures against Bradfield College and Cheltenham College, which saw the girls winning all but one match of the nine teams. During the week all age groups enjoyed some competitive and exciting singles matches against St Mary’s Calne, producing a fantastic standard of play across the board. Two open pairs were also entered into Bradfield’s inaugural Mixed Doubles Tournament, relishing the high standard of play and holding their own amongst tough competition.
The Junior Colts cricketers continued their great run in the national U15 Inspiresport ESCA Cup on Monday with a victory over King Edward VI School, Southampton. The win means Marlborough were crowned South West U15 Regional Champions for the third time in six years and qualified for last four in the country.
There was football action for the Girls’ U15A the following day as they drew 0-0 with St John’s whilst the open girls were victorious in a quartet of tennis fixtures against St Mary’s Calne.

On Wednesday, the Junior Colts continued their excellent week with a 29-run victory in the ESCA T20 U15 Final, played at Bishops Cannings CC. The Colts defeated Eton College in a match arranged as part of the Skill-Up Week programme for the Hundred, having seen Surrey face Glamorgan 24 hours earlier at the Oval. There were three more victories on Thursday for the XI against the Wiltshire Queries, the Girls’ XI over St Edward’s and the Yearlings 1st XI beat Dauntsey’s in the U14 Wiltshire Cup Final with skipper Charlie H scoring 71*.
On Friday morning the Yearlings rugby squad set off for Paris where they will play in a tournament on Saturday before returning on Monday. Follow @MCol_Rugby for more.
This Saturday, the final one of the Summer Term, will see 50 fixtures played with an athletics meeting against Bradfield, St Benedict’s School, St Mary’s Calne and Whitgift. There is a cricket block fixture with St Edward’s Oxford with further matches against Rendcomb College and Westonbirt School. In tennis, there are a plethora of matches against the likes of Downe House, Radley College and Winchester.
