Chalke Valley History Festival

Monday 3rd July 2023

Marlborough College’s History Department returned to the Chalke Valley History Festival on Tuesday 27th June. It was great to be back once again at such a well-organised and enriching event.

30 pupils and six members of staff enjoyed an array of talks by a variety of historians, ranging from the Cold War to Witchcraft trials and the French Revolution, put on as part of the Festival for Schools. There were also the normal historical and cultural stalls on offer, and pupils had access to re-enactments, talks on falconry, replica anti-tank weapons pieces, and much more.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly ‘The Trench’ experience, which saw our pupils (virtually) parachuted into the Oosterbeek Perimeter during the battle of Arnhem in 1944. Mentions in Dispatches go to Aleki J and Lara R for their work in clearing a minefield, and Dan M and Jamie G for braving machine gun fire to retrieve an ammunition crate.

Thanks to Christopher Moule, Alistair Hamilton, Matt Gow, Matt Blossom, and John Wright for accompanying the trip.
