Chapel Publication Launch

Friday 29th September 2023

Today, on the Feast of St Michael and All Angels, we are delighted to be launching a new digital publication which celebrates the history of our beautiful Chapel.

Marlborough possesses an extraordinary architectural heritage, and its Chapel is one of the greatest ecclesiastical buildings of the Victorian age.  The first chapel of 1848 was replaced in 1886 by the architect George Frederick Bodley’s magnificent structure, but this was enriched by some of the remarkable decoration from its predecessor. The story of the ambitious enrichment of the first chapel and the aspirations of those who set about this work and the creation of the new building is an extraordinary tale. The role of the Chapel in the life of the College, past and present, is an equally important history which this publication tells.

The new publication has been researched and authored by Dr Niall Hamilton (CR 1985-  ), with a closing contribution from our Chaplain, Reverend Tim Novis. The sumptuous photography is by Gavin James, Director of the Blackett Observatory and Head of Astronomy, and by Pete Davies.

It is hoped that this book, together with a companion volume which focuses in greater detail on the Chapel’s paintings and interior decoration, will help the Marlborough community realise that this beautiful building is there to teach us in many ways and to provide important lessons which reach beyond the world of examinations.
