Act of Remembrance

Monday 13th November 2023

On Armistice Day, Saturday 11th November, just before 11.00am the College stopped to observe the two minute silence.

The College community gathered in Court to remember all those who have given their lives in service to their country and in particular, the 749 of our number who died in The Great War, the 417 who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the Second World War, and OMs who have died serving their country more recently.

The Exhortation was recited by Will S, Senior Prefect:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them.

At 10.58am the haunting notes of the Last Post sounded out across the campus from the Mound. The silence was impeccably observed and its conclusion was marked by the Reveille. Our trumpeter Jack H-S is to be congratulated for his contribution to the emotion of the occasion.

Daisy D, Senior Prefect, then recited the Kohima Epitaph:

When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today.

Our Act of Remembrance was concluded by a final prayer from our Chaplain, the Reverend Novis.

The College community gathered again on Sunday with Chapel full for the Remembrance Sunday service, whilst the Shell attended a Remembrance Assembly in The Memorial Hall. Images from the weekend’s Remembrance events can be viewed below.
