Performing Shakespeare

Monday 27th November 2023

English A level pupils enjoyed a delightful workshop with celebrated actor Sir Simon Russell Beale, who generously gave of his time to share his experiences of performing Shakespeare with them.

Sir Simon, who has played many of the great Shakespearean roles, focused on Hamlet and King Lear, set texts for the Upper Sixth, and put some of our pupils through their paces as they performed key speeches from the plays. Accolades go to Poppy I, Idris S and Poppy G-C who were directed by Sir Simon as a means of exploring different interpretations and the significance of the finest dramatic details.

We took the opportunity to show some of the College’s Rare Book collection to the pupils and Sir Simon, including the 1577 Holinshed Chronicles, from which Shakespeare took much of his inspiration.
