There has been a French feel to a number of academic endeavours this week with the annual Joutes Oratoires debating competition and La Chandeleur celebrations.
The week began with all Shell pupils who are studying French heading to Norwood to learn about La Chandeleur, a French tradition celebrated on February 2nd (Candlemas) each year. Each pupil attended a lesson in Norwood Hall where they enjoyed making crêpes with assorted fillings!
In the Lower Sixth, Marlborough continued the annual tradition of hosting the South West heat of the Joutes Oratoires, a national French-language debating competition. This week saw James T, Juliana D, Theo M and Eden D compete against Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Reading, Cheltenham, Colyton and Downe House, arguing over motions on AI, video surveillance in the classroom and Napoleon’s leadership qualities. A terrific workout for their on-the-spot language skills, and a fine challenge to take on.
