A Book for St David’s Day

Friday 1st March 2024

To mark St David’s Day, here is a closer look at the College’s early Victorian copy of a Welsh translation of the Holy Bible, Y Bibl cyssegr-lan sef Yr Hen Destament, a’r Newydd.

The text follows the 1588 translation of the Old Testament by William Morgan, Bishop of Llandaff, and the 1567 translation of the New Testament by William Salesbury, which Morgan revised. Both men consulted the original Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic texts for their translations, which pre-date the English King James’ Version (KJV) of 1611.

The College’s copy was published in Llundain (London) in 1841.
