Morocco: City to Sands

Wednesday 22nd May 2024

We left the UK on Tuesday 9th April at lunchtime and landed in Marrakech, Morocco in late afternoon to much warmer weather. We spent our first evening at the market in Marrakech where we experienced the lively atmosphere of street performers, stalls, and music. It was almost overwhelming to be surrounded by so many people hollering, trying to gain our attention so that they could sell you items that you didn’t need. It was a great welcome and a good insight to what the country has to offer.

During the trip, we biked around 40km a day (for four days) with lunch halfway through each day and multiple stops to keep us hydrated. The weather was hot, and the air became drier the further away from the city we travelled and the closer we got to the desert.

One of my favourite memories from the trip was staying in a different hotel each night. It meant we could experience different atmospheres and really reflect on the different areas that Morocco has to offer. My favourite was the Oscar Hotel, which is next to Atlas Studios where famous films and TV series have been filmed like Game of Thrones, Gladiator 1 & 2, Prince of Persia, and many others. We were lucky enough to be given a tour of the studio.

Other highlights of the trip were: learning how pottery is made in Morocco, visiting one of the stalls with pottery all over the walls and floors in beautiful vibrant colours, the overnight trip to the Sahara Desert with camel riding, and finally trying the delicious delicacies served to us, the most popular being Moroccan Tea which we had at almost every meal.

A big thank you to Mr Tong, Miss Thompson, Alex Langdon, and the crew out in Morocco for making this outstanding trip possible. I would love to visit again!
