Higher Education Fair

Friday 21st June 2024

The Higher Education and Gap Year Fair on Monday 10th June provided an incredibly valuable experience for pupils, showcasing a wide array of educational and career opportunities including routes to the Army, Navy and RAF. The Lower Sixth had the chance to interact with representatives from various universities, both well-known and lesser known, including a couple of very notable institutions from outside the UK for example, some Dutch universities and even IE Madrid. Popular universities among Marlburians, such as Exeter, Bristol and Bath, were well represented alongside Russell Group and non-Russell Group institutions.

After reflecting on the event with a number of peers, it seems common that speaking with the representatives has been incredibly beneficial, offering detailed insights into each institution. This opportunity has helped many pupils who initially had set preferences to reconsider and expand their options.

The diversity of choices extended beyond traditional university paths to include apprenticeships and gap year programmes. These gap year options were very popular among the Lower Sixth offering a wide range from cooking courses, to ski instructor courses in Canada, to volunteering in Africa. Such experiences could be tailored to align with pupils’ academic interests, providing a unique way to prepare for university while exploring new places.

The Fair also highlighted the flexibility within university courses, which reassured many of the Lower Sixth about their future educational paths. Overall, the event was a wide-ranging and eye-opening opportunity, that has allowed pupils to make a more informed decision about our future.
