Review of this year’s A level Art Coursework & Examination Creative Work

The engine and heart of creativity within the Art School over the first half of the school year is the Upper Sixth A level coursework. This involves sharpening and developing the visual thought process across a variety of media and working in mediums outside one’s comfort zone before beginning a resolved composition. Bringing such work to fruition within sustained pieces can be thrilling and in doing so pupils learn much about themselves.

Within the pupil art at Marlborough there is no infused ‘house’ style, individuality is the middle name and motto. Curiosity, eagerness, reflection, decision and risk-taking, often ambitious and innovative, takes place; sometimes linear, sometimes more lateral and no less worthy. Our aim is to bring the best out of each pupil: best thinking in bringing thoughts visible and very best practical techniques to make visible, and making permanent, those thoughts, concept and impulses.

Each pupil is encouraged to take ownership across this journey, bringing creativity to a resolution as well as hitherto unforeseen potential, ascending heights, diversity in style, thinking, approach and meaning. A visual feast springs to mind.

Review of GCSE Art

This gallery of images but a fraction of what is created on the GCSE Art course showing how stimulating and rewarding it is for those pupils who wish to receive a creative grounding within the discipline of Fine Art.

Pupils experience both two and three-dimensional work within the following specialisms: painting, drawing and mixed media, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, computer manipulated imagery, film, animation, alongside digital and darkroom photography.

This exciting course allows teachers flexibility in supporting pupils, through creative activities and structured programmes of study, to create a personal response to their own experiences, environment and culture in the form of a creative visual journey. Pupils develop an understanding of the purpose, function and importance of art within the context of historical and contemporary society. As the course progresses, pupils are increasingly encouraged to make personal decisions and directions leading to sustained piece outcomes in both the coursework and in the examination project. The resulting images speak for themselves.
