On Sunday the 5th of October, we had a Black History Month Service in Chapel: pupil-led with personal insights surrounding culture and inclusivity.
The central theme was standing firm in power and pride, with speeches from Christiana B and Millie A, as well as music specifically curated towards the month – music from abolitionists and meaningful pieces about Black History explained by EDI prefect Olive C.
The service was attended by a full chapel of Marlburians and was met with curiosity and engagement. The choir sang beautifully and Reverend Novis gave blessings and prayers throughout, highlighting and embracing culture and the impact black people have had on our society and our own community here at Marlborough College. It was a significant and beautiful service to start our activities to mark Black History Month.
The Chapel Service was followed by another pupil-led event in Norwood Hall. On the 15th of October, our amazing catering staff, working with the EDI Prefects – Olive C and Aston S – created a spectacular themed meal with food ranging from Kenya to Eritrea, Zambia to Somalia and more! It was thoroughly enjoyed by pupils and staff as part of a celebratory evening in the dining hall which included music.
Each Department has also been including relevant discussions in lessons as we take the opportunity of this annual month-long celebration to foster learning, understanding and recognition.
