Over the past three days, the College community has come together to remember all those who have given their lives in service to their country and, in particular, the 749 of our number who died in The Great War, the 417 who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the Second World War, and Old Marlburians who have died serving their country more recently.
On Sunday 9th November, the Chapel was full for the Remembrance Sunday service, whilst the Shell attended a Remembrance Assembly in The Memorial Hall. Chapel began at 10.45am, including an address by The Reverend Tim Novis, Senior Chaplain. The Book of Remembrance and wreaths of poppies were laid at the High Altar. The Reading from The Book of Wisdom was given by Senior Prefect, Bea G and the Intercessions were led by Cadet RSM, Eloise B. The Address was given by Lieutenant Piers Tabor (B1 2014 – 19), Grenadier Guards.
The CCF provided a party of 30 Upper Sixth cadets in Chapel and an Honour Guard of some 35 Lower Sixth cadets and 68 Hundred cadets paraded in Court.
Following the Service, the CCF hosted a Remembrance lunch in the Adderley for senior cadets and their families to end a very special day in the College calendar.
On Armistice Day, Monday 11th November, just before 11.00am the College stopped to observe the two-minute silence in Court.
The Exhortation was recited by Lukas M, Senior Prefect:
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them.
At 10.58am the haunting notes of the Last Post sounded out across Court. The silence was impeccably observed and its conclusion was marked by the Reveille. Our trumpeter Jack M is to be congratulated for his contribution to the emotion of the occasion.
Bea G, Senior Prefect, then recited the Kohima Epitaph:
When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today.
Our Act of Remembrance was concluded by a final prayer from our Chaplain, the Reverend Novis.
