It seemed so very apt for the Modern Languages and Music Department’s Advent event to be held on the evening of the first frost. With the smell of mulled wine and mince pies wafting from the back of the room and a packed Adderley, with support from Parents, Grandparents, Beaks and the many performers, everyone was smiling and in the right spirit.
The evening runs with readings from the Bible in a host of modern languages, interspersed with topical vocal solos. The readers declaimed with confidence in eight languages (Italian, French, Russian, Mandarin, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese and German) and special mention must go to the wonderful drumming for the Arabic reading, as well as so many brave Lower School readers.
The singers presented a beautiful programme from the serious and demanding arias by Bach (Maria T and Bo G) through to work from the 20th century – with Arvo Pärt (Josh T) and Warlock (Camilla G)
It was especially pleasing to hear the wonderful voices of our new Shell musicians, who both sang with confidence and mature musicianship (Reina B and Scarlett P). From the Remove, we heard the warm tones of Ava K and Jon S and the Upper Sixth completed the programme with the popular Pie Jesu by Faure (Faith S) and Selve Amiche by Caldara (Paddy C)
It was a special treat to hear our five Oxford University Choral award holders bring the programme to a close.
