Vanbrugh: new articles

Thursday 26th February 2026

Since the publication of the first batch of articles, we were lucky to have an audience with Sir Charles Saumarez Smith at the Academic Scholars’ Dinner, who articulated his passion for Vanbrugh and helped scholars to understand the reason and momentum for the choice of title for this year’s publication. Our next selection of articles continues to demonstrate the great range of disciplines both present during and inspired by Vanbrugh’s time, and form an eclectic view of pupils’ interests and passions outside of the typical Marlborough curriculum.

I have called upon my Remove co-editors, Sophia and Felix, to introduce the next round of articles:

“We have been awe-struck by the spectacular breadth and depth of these articles by our fellow scholars. From Seb G’s meticulous and carefully curated description on the eccentric monarchs of the Great Northern War, to Ella-Mae S’s imaginative window into the historical importance of perfumes, we believe that this is the perfect glimpse of the work we as scholars have embarked on this year. Jon S’s exploration of the mathematical genius of Vanbrugh, and Zoe H’s remarkable explanation of the 18th century gin craze, not to mention the modern relevance of Bea C’s discussion of universities, as inspired by Vanbrugh himself, provide an extraordinary backdrop for this publication, and we are very proud to have helped edit these remarkable articles.”

You can read these articles on our Vanbrugh and his Time webpage. Further contributions will follow shortly.
