100 Objects: Further afield

Monday 2nd March 2026

We are delighted to share a new instalment of ‘Marlborough in a Hundred Objects’, exploring five remarkable objects that reveal the College’s story far beyond the Wiltshire downs.

Marlborough has always been an outward-looking community, drawing pupils from across the country and around the world, and in turn sending generations of Old Marlburians into lives and careers that stretch across continents. The College’s influence can be traced in unexpected places: in schools and churches, in distant landscapes, and in the legacies of individuals whose connection to Marlborough shaped lives far beyond the boundaries of the campus.

This latest set of objects takes us on a journey ‘further afield’, from the Cornish coastline to the Himalayas, from a working farm at Marlborough College Malaysia to a pulpit in Tottenham that carries echoes of Victorian reform and religious life. Along the way, it reflects on philanthropy, education, partnership, and the global reach of the Marlburian community. The story of the Trevalga Estate highlights the lasting impact of generosity and stewardship, while Barton Farm in Malaysia shows how Marlborough’s values continue to evolve through sustainability and community engagement. The bust of George Cotton in Shimla opens a window onto a powerful educational legacy in India, and Farrar’s pulpit reminds us how objects can travel, gathering meaning as they pass from one Marlborough chapter to another.

Finally, this group concludes with one of the College’s unique treasures: the Blackett Telescope. A striking reminder that Marlborough’s reach is not only geographical, it is also intellectual and imaginative — extending, quite literally, into the furthest reaches of space.

We have now reached 90 objects in our ‘Marlborough in a Hundred Objects’ series.

We hope you enjoy this latest instalment and what it reveals about Marlborough’s history, its people, and the extraordinary places — near and far — where the College’s story continues to be told.
