Flight School takes off

Wednesday 4th March 2026

Tuesday 3rd March marked a significant milestone for Marlborough College as the Flight School officially launched with its inaugural flights.

Vigo G, Tom M-B, Joao F and Blue S-B became the first ever pupils to take to the skies under the programme, setting a precedent for what we hope will become a thriving and inspiring co-curricular opportunity. Each pupil flew in an Icarus C-42 aircraft alongside a qualified instructor, experiencing first-hand the precision, focus and exhilaration that light aircraft flying demands.

After a thorough pre-flight briefing covering aircraft controls, safety procedures and basic flight principles, the pupils were able to see theory translated directly into practice. Once airborne, they experienced gentle climbs, turns and straight-and-level flight, gaining a real appreciation of how small control inputs translate into movement through the air. For many, it was their first time in a light aircraft cockpit.

In a particularly memorable moment, the aircraft passed over the College sports pitches while afternoon training was in full swing below — a reminder of just how varied and dynamic the Marlborough experience can be.

The weather, which had been watched with understandable caution in the preceding fortnight, held perfectly on the day, allowing the programme to begin exactly as planned. Conditions were calm and clear, providing ideal circumstances for a first flight.

Most importantly, the pupils returned energised and enthusiastic, already talking about their next opportunity to fly. The Flight School aims not only to offer an unforgettable experience, but also to build confidence, discipline and technical understanding. For those with a developing interest in aviation, engineering or physics, it provides a tangible link between classroom learning and real-world application.

We look forward to expanding the programme and offering the opportunity to fly to as many pupils as possible in the months ahead.
