I sometimes wonder why I am still teaching at Marlborough College after 35 years and with no desire to retire. It is most likely to be that I observe every day that indefinable, commendable Marlborough spirit.
Last night’s evening recital was an example of this – a mix of musicians from grade 4 through to diploma, performing alongside each other and supporting and celebrating each other’s work, regardless of year group or standard. In the mix were a huge number of parents, grandparents, staff and friends who created a buzz in the packed Goodison Hall.
The evening opened with a confident percussion ensemble from Richard B, Ollie T, Aarin T, Fin L, Chen X, Hugh S. Iris H and George W, conducted by Sacha Johnson – a tantalising mix of marimbas, kit, cajon, castanets, glockenspiel, vibraphone and xylophone. George W then continued with a magical performance of Blue Memories on the College’s new marimba – an excellent first outing.
What followed was a delightful mix of vocal, clarinet, cello, violin and piano performances from Willa E, Alannah J, Hattie B, Hugo IH, Felix J, Florence L, Teia G and Roger X. All were admirable in their own way and some showed huge grit especially for those for whom this was their first public performance at Marlborough. The latter two were airing some repertoire for their forthcoming Diplomas and performed with confidence and boundless musicality.
In amongst the above, the flute quartet of Edie L, Tali S, Esme L and Henrietta M delighted us with the charming Dance of the Reeds by Tchaikovsky – a perfect sorbet for any concert!
This was a wonderful way to spend an evening in Spring.
