On Friday, the 19th of June, the culmination of the Model United Nations (MUN) teams past fortnight of events came to a close, as Marlborough College hosted our second Model United Nations conference.
Welcoming 430 pupils from 35 different schools, the event started with the Opening Ceremony, where pupils received talks from both Lord Evans, former Director of MI5, and Davina McCall MBE. Both spoke about some of the respective charities the pupils had been fundraising for, the Halo Trust and Action Medical Research.
We also celebrated the achievements of the MUN team throughout the two weeks prior, where Davina kindly announced their final total of £30,200 for charity. In that time, pupils had swum 52km, watt-bike 460km, dribbled a football for 5km, climbed 850m, wheelbarrowed for 5km, sold over 400 bags of sweets, ran a combined effort of 532km in their Ultra-Marathon, cat-walked down a runway 12 times for their MCMUN Fashion Show, and sold 14 bids in their Auction Night.
During the day of the conference, pupils debated topics ranging from Death Penalty to Freedom of Speech, and various politicians of the future were clearly born, with some superb debates occurring across the 12 committee rooms.
The day ended with Reading Blue Coat coming third representing Eritrea, Clifton College second with Canada and Abingdon first with China.
