Basketball continues to maintain its popularity at the College, providing an opportunity for pupils to learn new ball-handling skills in a high-octane athletic environment. Pupils develop a great sense of team spirit and mutual support as the season progresses from one of skills, drills, full-court running manoeuvres and tactics, to one of focussed game management and competition. Currently managed by Mr Martin Shaw (level 2 coach) and coached by Mr Matt Analts (level 3 coach). It is played by both boys and girls from any age group, either as a competitive team game or as a sporting Option.
Training occurs on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons throughout the Michaelmas term. During this term several fiercely-contested House competitions take place in the evenings after prep. These competitions now include separate competitions for three age groups amongst the girls’ Houses. Basketball is one of the most sought after of all the House sporting trophies; the competitions generate a fantastic atmosphere in the main college sports hall where the games take place. Recent investments have allowed us to develop elements of our facilities, and we have now equipped both Summerfield and Littlefield Houses with great outdoor basketball facilities (erected on their tennis courts). We have also equipped the main sports hall with NBA standard Perspex backboards with Pro-dunk rings. Inter-School competitive fixtures normally take place during Lent term when we test our abilities in up to ten home and way fixtures with local competition. Scrimmage basketball takes place throughout the Summer term.
The College has an excellent sports hall complex and a recently refurbished, award-winning gymnasium. These facilities house a fully-equipped fitness room, two studios, a classroom, and a Fencing salle. There are indoor cricket nets and facilities for a range of sports including indoor tennis, netball, basketball, volleyball and badminton.
In the Lent Term inter-school fixtures are played at U18 and U16 level for the boys against the college’s traditional public school rivals.
An improving scene (in terms of performance) saw our team achieve a 50% in rate against our opposition during the 2018 season.
