Golf

Golf is a popular sport at Marlborough and is played all year round across every age group. The College is fortunate to have access to top-class golfing facilities on its doorstep in Marlborough Golf Club, with whom we enjoy a close relationship. Our players benefit from expert tuition from qualified PGA professionals and have the opportunity to play at some of the best courses across the region. Golf is a sport for everyone at Marlborough from beginners through to developing players and low handicappers who wish to compete at the highest levels.

Joe Lane

Head of Golf

We enjoy a close relationship with Marlborough Golf Club which gives us access to top-class golfing facilities on our doorstep.

Marlborough competes against other major independent schools including Radley, Bradfield, Cheltenham, Canford, St Edward’s, Wellington and Winchester. We also enjoy fixtures against the Old Marlburians and at junior level against Pinewood Prep School. Our players play home fixtures at Marlborough Golf Club and the fixture list includes matches at superb courses across the south including the Royal Berkshire Golf Club, Bowood House and the Oxfordshire. Throughout the year the College fields four separate teams: U18 boys, U16 boys, U18 girls and a development team (all ages).

Each year Marlborough enters the West of England Independent Schools Golf Championships at Burnham & Berrow Golf Club. This represents a wonderful opportunity for our lowest handicappers to experience the challenges of links golf in a scratch competition format. In addition, Marlborough enters the HMC Foursomes; a challenging format for our players which sees us pitted against other UK independent schools. We also enter the ISGA Singles Competition in which our three lowest handicappers go head-to-head with the best players from their age group from other schools. Internally, our golfers compete in the Winter Short Game Order of Merit, the House Fourballs and the Pick Putter, a popular staff–pupil competition named after former Second Master Bob Pick.

At the end of every Lent Term our golfers have the opportunity to go on a three-day tour of the West Country taking in three of England’s finest links courses: Royal North Devon, the oldest course in the country, Saunton Golf Club and Burnham & Berrow.

Golf at Marlborough College is overseen by Joe Lane, a keen amateur golfer of single figure handicap. The sport enjoys great support within the Common Room, among whom there exists a healthy rivalry! Each year a group of staff compete against each other in the coveted North Devon Open Championship.
