Hugo Tilney

Hugo was appointed Housemaster of Littlefield in September 2022. He joined the College in 2014 and teaches English and Form, having previously run our Academic Scholarship and Leadership programmes. He was Resident House Tutor in C2 for five years before joining Littlefield as a tutor in 2020.

He currently coaches the Yearlings A Rugby and Colts 1st XI Cricket teams and also helps to run the College’s Fly Fishing Club and the River Restoration Outreach programme.

Hugo read English Literature at Bristol University and then completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Newspaper Journalism at Cardiff University. After working as a journalist, he completed a PGCE at Bristol and went on to teach at Wycliffe College, and then at Clifton College where he was an Assistant Housemaster. He enjoys cricket, golf, squash, fishing and exploring the outdoors. He is married to Katie, a GP partner, and they have three young children and a dog called Conker.


Littlefield Boarding House​

Key Facts

Littlefield is a mixed house with up to 50 boys (ten in each year group) and 15 Sixth Form girls. Littlefield was built in 1871 at the same time as Cotton but was extensively rebuilt in 1964 after a holiday-time fire destroyed one wing. It has its own grounds with a tennis court and football pitch and is five minutes’ walk from the centre of the College. At the heart of the house is the dining room where the pupils gather each morning for breakfast and for supper four times a week.

Tom Birkill​

Assistant Housemaster

After joining Marlborough in 2009, Tom served as Resident House Tutor in C3 from 2012 to 2018. He is Head of Biology and joins Littlefield in September 2023. A rugby and tennis  coach, he is also a member of the CCF. 


Tina Smith


Tina joined Littlefield in November 2022 and looks after the pupils and the house support team. She is married with two daughters and lives locally.
