Sacha Johnson

Sacha studied percussion at the Birmingham Conservatoire and won a scholarship to study at the Guildhall School of Music. This was followed by a Fellowship at the Tanglewood Institute. He has worked regularly with the UK’s leading orchestras and opera companies including the London Symphony, the London Philharmonic, the Halle, the Royal Opera House, Opera North and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared as guest principal with the Bournemouth Symphony, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony, the Welsh National Opera and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Away from the classical world, Sacha has worked on several West End productions and on music for film and television. 

Sacha has been teaching percussion at Marlborough since 1996, becoming the Senior Percussion Tutor in 2007. He has taught percussion at the Trinity Laban College of Music Junior Department and has worked with the National Youth Orchestra of Britain. He has been an examiner for the Trinity music exam board and a percussion tutor for the IAPS music course. 

In 2015 Sacha was invited to be the Principal Percussionist of the Chineke! Orchestra, Europe’s first professional BAME orchestra which helps to promote greater diversity in classical music. 

He is a self-confessed percussion anorak, being a member of the National Association of Percussion Teachers, Vibes Workshop and the Percussive Arts Society.
