Choirmaster - Adam Staines

Adam is the Choirmaster of Marlborough College where he leads the aspiring and diverse programme of choral music; he directs the Chapel Choir, Chamber Choir, Compline Choir, Junior Singers, Beaks’ Choir, and the 250-strong Marlborough College Choral Society and Orchestra. He also teaches academic music to Oxbridge level, plays the organ on occasion for Chapel, and coaches hockey at the College.

Adam was born in Bury St Edmunds, where he later held a Choral Scholarship at St Edmundsbury Cathedral and also began to learn the organ under David Humphreys. He graduated from the University of Leeds with an honours degree in Music, and the University of Buckingham with a Postgraduate Certificate of Education. Whilst at Leeds, he specialised in Performance and Analysis with a keen interest in Early Music. He also conducted the University Chamber Orchestra in his final year, and directed a vocal consort to win the University of Leeds Chamber Music Competition. In addition to this, he held a Choral Scholarship at Leeds Cathedral, where he was also invited to conduct the Boys’ Choir on occasion; he was also asked to dep for Leeds Minster and Leeds College of Music. As well as recording various choral works on the Brilliant Classics label, Adam has sung on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 4, as a soloist for the Headingley Academy of Operatic Research, and for HRH The Prince of Wales. Adam has conducted a small choir alongside Bob Chilcott, David Bednall, and Jonathan Willcocks at Salisbury Cathedral in a memorial service for Sir David Willcocks in 2016.

More recently, Adam has been appointed a tutor by Beauchamp Early Music, working closely alongside David Hatcher and Philip Thorby (Emeritus Professor, Trinity Laban Conservatoire), conducting choirs and early music ensembles, and playing as répétiteur for soloists. In addition to this, Adam has sung at many places of prestigious choral heritage including, St Paul’s Cathedral, Gloucester Cathedral, Eton College, Keble College (Oxon), Edington Priory, and Salisbury Cathedral. Adam is also a very keen composer, and specialises in choral composition; he has recently written a piece for Huw Williams (Director of Music, Bath Abbey) and the Choir of Bath Abbey.
